What Is Third Party Car Insurance in Kenya?
Β Third party car insurance in Kenya is the minimum legal motor cover required under the Traffic Act (Cap 405). It pays compensation to other people β€” pedestrians, other drivers, passengers β€” if your vehicle injures them or damages their property. It does not cover damage to your own vehicle. All Kenyan vehicles must carry at least this cover or the driver faces fines, vehicle impoundment, or prosecution.

Third party car insurance is often called TPO β€” Third Party Only. It is the most basic, most affordable, and most widely held motor insurance product in Kenya.
Here is what it does in plain terms. If you cause an accident and injure another person or damage their vehicle or property, your insurer pays the compensation on your behalf. Without it, that bill lands on you personally β€” and in Kenya, third party claims frequently run into hundreds of thousands or millions of shillings.

What it does not do is equally important to understand. It will not pay a single shilling toward repairing your own car, replacing your vehicle if it is stolen, or compensating you for any loss on your side of the accident. For that, you need comprehensive car insurance.

Β Is Third Party Car Insurance Legally Mandatory in Kenya?
Yes. Without question. This is not optional.
Section 205 of the Traffic Act (Cap 405) makes it a criminal offence to drive or permit any vehicle to be driven on a public road in Kenya without a minimum of third party insurance cover. It does not matter whether you are driving a twenty-year-old Nissan Sunny worth KES 80,000 or a brand new Land Cruiser worth KES 12 million. Cover is required.
The penalties for driving uninsured in Kenya are real and enforced:
  • Fines of up to KES 50,000
  • Vehicle impoundment at the nearest police station
  • Criminal prosecution under the Traffic Act
  • Personal liability for the full cost of any accident you cause β€” which can reach millions of shillings in serious injury cases
Beyond the legal risk, consider the financial exposure. A pedestrian fatality caused by an uninsured driver can result in a court-awarded compensation of KES 2 million to KES 10 million or more. That is a sum that would financially destroy most Kenyan households. Third party insurance transfers that entire risk to your insurer for as little as KES 4,500 per year.
What Does Third Party Car Insurance Cover in Kenya?
Third party car insurance in Kenya covers your legal liability to other people. Specifically:
Third party bodily injury and death. If your vehicle injures or kills another person β€” a pedestrian crossing Thika Road, a passenger in another car, a cyclist on Ngong Road β€” your insurer pays their medical bills, compensation, and funeral costs where applicable. Under Kenyan law, there is no monetary cap on this liability. Your insurer covers the full awarded amount.
Third party property damage. If you crash into another vehicle, drive into someone's shop front, or knock down a perimeter wall, your insurer pays the cost of repairing or replacing that third party property.
Legal defence costs. If the injured party takes you to court, your insurer covers the cost of your legal defence β€” lawyers, court fees, and any awarded compensation β€” up to the policy limits.
That is the scope of third party car insurance. It is specifically designed to protect other people from the consequences of your driving. Not you. Not your car. Everyone else on the road.

What Third Party Insurance Does NOT Cover
This is just as important to understand before you buy.
Third party insurance will not pay for:
  • Damage to your own vehicle β€” from a collision, pothole damage, or any other cause
  • Your own medical expenses if you are injured in an accident you caused
  • Theft of your vehicle β€” if your car is stolen, third party insurance pays nothing
  • Fire damage to your own car β€” electrical fires, arson, or accidental fires are not covered
  • Flooding or storm damage to your vehicle
  • Windscreen replacement or mechanical damage
If these risks matter to you β€” and for any vehicle worth more than KES 500,000 they should β€” consider comprehensive motor insurance or at minimum third party, fire and theft cover, which adds protection for your own vehicle against theft and fire while keeping premiums well below comprehensive rates.

A Note on PSV and Boda Boda Insurance
Public service vehicles and commercial motorcycles have specific regulatory requirements that go beyond a standard third party private vehicle policy.
PSVs β€” matatus, buses, taxis, and ride-hailing vehicles β€” must carry a PSV-specific insurance policy that includes passenger liability cover meeting the requirements set by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). Standard private third party insurance is not valid for a vehicle operating as a PSV.
Boda bodas β€” commercial motorcycles carrying passengers for hire β€” similarly require a specific motorcycle PSV policy rather than a private motorcycle third party policy. Carrying a fare-paying passenger on a private motorcycle policy is a policy breach that voids your cover entirely.
GetCovered Kenya's motorcycle insurance and motor commercial insurance products are specifically structured for these use cases. If you operate a boda boda or a matatu, do not buy a standard private vehicle policy and assume you are covered. You are not.

Β Third Party vs Comprehensive Car Insurance in Kenya β€” Which Should You Choose?
This is the question every Kenyan car owner eventually faces. Here is an honest answer based on your vehicle's situation β€” not a sales pitch.

Injury/death to others | βœ… Covered | βœ… Covered | βœ… Covered

Annual cost (mid-range car) | KES 5,500–7,500 | KES 9,000–15,000 | KES 25,000–60,000+
Choose third party only if:
Your vehicle is more than 10–12 years old and its market value is below KES 500,000. At that value, the premium for comprehensive cover may approach or exceed the vehicle's worth β€” making TPO the economically rational choice.
Choose third party, fire and theft if:
Your vehicle is older but you are particularly concerned about theft β€” which is statistically the most common motor loss in Nairobi. Adding fire and theft cover costs relatively little above TPO but adds meaningful protection.
Choose comprehensive if:
Your vehicle is worth more than KES 800,000, you have a bank loan or lease on the vehicle (your lender will require it), or you simply cannot afford to replace your car out of pocket if it is written off. See our full comprehensive motor insurance page for details.

How to Buy Third Party Car Insurance in Kenya in 3 Steps
GetCovered Kenya has removed every unnecessary step from the process.
Step 1 β€” Tell us about your vehicle.
Enter your vehicle type, registration number, and contact details in the quote form above. This takes less than 60 seconds. No logbook upload required at this stage. No valuation report. No broker visit.
Step 2 β€” Compare quotes from IRA-licensed insurers.
Our system pulls live rates from 20+ licensed Kenyan insurers and displays them side by side. You see the annual premium, monthly installment option, the insurer's name, and the IRA registration number β€” all in one view. No sales pressure. No hidden extras.
Step 3 β€” Pay via M-Pesa and receive your certificate.
Select your preferred policy. Confirm the M-Pesa STK push on your Safaricom line. Your official, IRA-compliant motor insurance certificate is transmitted to your WhatsApp number and email address within seconds of payment. Print it, show it on your phone, or keep it in your glove compartment β€” it is legally valid in all three forms.

What Documents You Need
The process requires minimal paperwork:
  • Your National ID or Passport number
  • Your KRA PIN (available from iTax at itax.kra.go.ke)
  • Your vehicle's registration number (from your logbook)
  • Your M-Pesa-registered phone number for payment
That is all. No physical valuation report is required for third party insurance β€” unlike comprehensive cover, which requires a valuation because your own vehicle's value is being insured.

Third Party Car Insurance for Specific Vehicles in Kenya

Third Party Insurance for Matatus and PSVs
Kenya has approximately 140,000 registered PSVs β€” matatus, buses, shuttles, and taxis β€” all of which require specific PSV motor insurance that satisfies NTSA requirements. A standard third party private vehicle policy is not valid for any vehicle operating as a PSV.
PSV insurance in Kenya must include:
  • Third party liability cover meeting NTSA minimums
  • Passenger liability cover for fare-paying passengers
  • The insurer must be on the NTSA-approved panel
GetCovered Kenya's motor commercial insurance covers PSV operators across all vehicle categories. Contact our team directly via WhatsApp for PSV fleet quotes.

Third Party Insurance for Boda Bodas
Kenya's boda boda sector employs an estimated 1.5 million riders β€” making it one of the country's largest informal employment sectors. Every boda boda operating as a commercial motorcycle taxi requires PSV motorcycle insurance, not a standard private motorcycle third party policy.
The distinction matters critically at claims time. If a rider carries a passenger under a private motorcycle policy and that passenger is injured, the insurer can β€” and frequently does β€” decline the claim on grounds of policy breach. The passenger is then left without compensation, and the rider faces personal liability.
GetCovered Kenya's motorcycle insurance is specifically structured for commercial boda boda operations. Premiums start from KES 1,500 annually for private motorcycles and vary for commercial PSV motorcycles depending on the operator's profile.

Third Party Insurance for Newly Imported Vehicles
A vehicle arriving from Japan, the UK, or anywhere else through Mombasa port needs valid insurance before it can be driven off the clearing agent's yard and onto Kenyan roads. Many importers use short-term "time on risk" cover β€” a temporary third party policy β€” to drive the vehicle from Mombasa to Nairobi before sorting out annual cover.
Time on risk third party cover is available for periods as short as one week or one month, typically at KES 1,500 to KES 3,000 for a private vehicle. Contact our team if you need this for an import.

How to Make a Third Party Insurance Claim in Kenya
If you are involved in an accident where another person makes a claim against you, here is what happens and what you need to do.
Immediately after the accident:
Do not leave the scene. Exchange details with all other parties β€” names, ID numbers, phone numbers, vehicle registration numbers, and insurance certificate details. Take photographs of all vehicles involved, the road conditions, and any injuries or property damage. Call the police if there are injuries or significant property damage.
Report to your insurer within 24 hours.
Most third party insurance policies in Kenya require you to notify your insurer of any incident β€” whether or not a formal claim is made against you. Late notification can complicate your claim. Call GetCovered Kenya's claims line or WhatsApp us and we will guide you through the process.
Obtain a police abstract.
For any accident involving injury or significant property damage, obtain an OB (Occurrence Book) abstract from the nearest police station. This is a mandatory document for any third party insurance claim in Kenya.
Do not admit liability at the scene.
This is critical. Do not admit fault, apologise, or offer to pay anything to the other party at the roadside. This is your insurer's job β€” any admission of liability can complicate the claims process.
What happens next:
Your insurer's claims team will assess the claim, investigate liability, and negotiate with the third party on your behalf. For straightforward property damage claims, resolution typically takes two to six weeks. For bodily injury claims β€” particularly serious ones β€” the process can take longer depending on medical assessments and legal proceedings.
GetCovered Kenya's claims support team is available to advocate on your behalf throughout this process.

H2: Frequently Asked Questions β€” Third Party Car Insurance Kenya
Is third party car insurance mandatory in Kenya?
Yes. Under Section 205 of the Traffic Act (Cap 405), every motor vehicle on a public road must carry at least third party insurance. Driving without it is a criminal offence punishable by fines of up to KES 50,000, vehicle impoundment, or prosecution. All GetCovered Kenya motor insurance policies meet this legal requirement.
How much does third party car insurance cost in Kenya in 2026?
Third party car insurance in Kenya starts from KES 4,500 per year for a small private car under 1500cc. Rates range up to KES 35,000+ for heavy commercial vehicles and significantly higher for PSVs depending on seating capacity. Motorcycle third party insurance starts from KES 1,500 annually. Use the quote widget above to see your exact rate.
Can I buy third party insurance for just one month in Kenya?
Yes. Short-term "time on risk" third party cover is available for periods as short as one week or one month. This is commonly used for newly imported vehicles being driven from Mombasa port, or for vehicles that will only be on the road temporarily. Monthly rates typically range from KES 800 to KES 2,500 depending on vehicle type.
Does third party insurance cover my passengers?
Third party insurance covers injury or death to third parties β€” which technically includes your own passengers in many policy wordings. However, this cover is for their claims against you, not a personal accident benefit paid directly to them. For comprehensive passenger protection, particularly for PSV and commercial operators, passenger liability cover is essential and is included in our motor commercial insurance product.
What happens if an uninsured driver hits my vehicle in Kenya?
This is a painful and unfortunately common situation. If the other driver has no insurance, your third party policy will not help you β€” because third party only covers your liability to others, not losses caused by others to you. Your only recourse is to pursue the uninsured driver personally through the courts, which is often difficult. This is one of the strongest arguments for upgrading to comprehensive cover, which pays for your own vehicle's damage regardless of the other party's insurance status.
Do I need a valuation report to get third party insurance?
No. Unlike comprehensive insurance, third party insurance does not require a vehicle valuation report because your own vehicle is not being insured. You only need your logbook registration number, National ID or passport, and KRA PIN. The process is entirely digital on the GetCovered Kenya platform.
Can I pay for third party car insurance monthly in Kenya?
Yes. GetCovered Kenya offers monthly installment payment plans for qualifying third party insurance policies through our Lipa Mdogo Mdogo arrangement. Monthly premiums for a private car typically start from KES 800 per month. Payment is made via M-Pesa automatic debit on a date of your choosing each month.
Is my third party insurance certificate valid if I show it on my phone?
Yes. The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) of Kenya recognises digital insurance certificates as legally valid. A certificate displayed on your smartphone is legally equivalent to a printed copy. Traffic police and NTSA inspectors are required to accept a digital certificate. GetCovered Kenya delivers all certificates in WhatsApp-ready format for exactly this reason.
