James rides a Bajaj Boxer from Umoja to CBD every morning. He is registered with a boda boda SACCO, carries passengers daily, and has been renewing his insurance sticker every year from a guy near his stage who prints certificates on the spot.

Here is the problem. That certificate is not backed by any IRA-licensed insurer. If James injures a passenger today, he is personally liable for every shilling of compensation. The police check he passed this morning accepted the sticker. A hospital bill of KES 400,000 will not accept it.

GetCovered Kenya issues legitimate, IRA-licensed motorcycle insurance certificates in Kenya — for boda boda operators, private riders, and delivery fleets. Pay via M-Pesa. Certificate on WhatsApp in under three minutes. From KES 1,500 per year.

What Is Motorcycle Insurance in Kenya and Who Needs It?

Motorcycle insurance in Kenya is a legal requirement under the Traffic Act (Cap 405) for every motorcycle on a public road — including boda bodas, delivery bikes, private motorcycles, and tuktuks. The minimum legal cover is third party insurance, which pays compensation to other people injured or whose property is damaged by the motorcycle. Boda boda operators carrying fare-paying passengers require a specific PSV motorcycle policy  a standard private third party policy is legally invalid for commercial passenger use.

Every motorcycle on a Kenyan road needs insurance. This is not negotiable. Section 205 of the Traffic Act makes it a criminal offence to ride or permit anyone to ride a motorcycle on a public road without at least third party insurance cover.

But there is something more specific that most Kenyan riders  particularly boda boda operators do not understand. The type of insurance you need depends on how you use the motorcycle. Using the wrong type of policy means your insurance is invalid the moment you need it most.

There are three distinct categories of motorcycle users in Kenya, and each requires a different insurance product:
Private motorcycle riders — people who ride their own motorcycle for personal transport. Standard third party or comprehensive private motorcycle insurance is appropriate.
Boda boda operators — motorcycles carrying fare-paying passengers as a commercial service. These require a PSV motorcycle insurance policy, not a standard private policy. Carrying a paying passenger on a private motorcycle policy voids your cover entirely.
Delivery and commercial riders — motorcycles used for goods delivery, courier services, or any other commercial purpose. These require commercial motorcycle insurance structured for goods transport.

GetCovered Kenya issues the correct policy for your specific use case. Every time.

Why Fake Motorcycle Insurance Is a Massive Problem in Kenya
Let us be direct about this. It needs saying.

A significant percentage of motorcycle insurance certificates circulating in Kenya particularly in the boda boda sector are either fake, issued by unlicensed intermediaries, or backed by insurers who cannot or will not pay claims.

The IRA has documented this problem extensively. Roadside insurance sellers operating near boda boda stages, informal WhatsApp groups offering cheap certificates, and even some SACCO administrators have been found issuing non-compliant or fraudulent insurance documents.

What happens in practice is this: The rider passes every police check with the sticker on the number plate. The NTSA inspection accepts the certificate at face value. But when there is a serious accident a pedestrian fatality, a passenger hospitalised with a spinal injury  the insurer named on the certificate either does not exist, is not licensed by the IRA, or simply declines the claim because the policy was never legitimately issued.

The rider is then personally liable. For a pedestrian death claim in Kenya, courts have awarded compensation of KES 2 million to KES 8 million. That is a debt that will follow a boda boda rider for the rest of his life.

GetCovered Kenya works exclusively with IRA-licensed Kenyan insurance companies. Every motorcycle insurance certificate we issue carries the name, IRA registration number, and policy number of the actual underwriting insurer verifiable at ira.go.ke by anyone who wants to check. That is the only standard that matters at claims time.

Types of Motorcycle Insurance Available in Kenya

Third Party Only — Private Motorcycle

The minimum legal cover for a privately used motorcycle. Covers your legal liability to other people injury, death, or property damage caused by your motorcycle.

What it covers:
Bodily injury or death of a third party caused by your motorcycle
  • Damage to third party property
  • Legal defence costs if a claim is made against you

What it does not cover:
Damage to your own motorcycle
  • Your own medical expenses if you are injured
  • Theft of your motorcycle
  • Passengers carrying for fare

Best for: Private motorcycle owners who ride only for personal use and whose bike is an older model with lower market value.

Annual premium: From KES 1,500 to KES 3,500 depending on engine capacity and insurer.

PSV Motorcycle Insurance — Boda Boda

This is the legally correct insurance for any motorcycle operating as a commercial passenger carrier what most Kenyans call a boda boda.

If you carry fare-paying passengers, you must hold a PSV motorcycle policy. A standard private third party policy is legally invalid the moment a passenger sits on the back of your bike. This is not a grey area. The Insurance Act and the Traffic Act are both explicit on this point.

PSV motorcycle insurance includes:
Third party liability same as private cover
  • Passenger liability — covers compensation claims from fare-paying passengers injured while on your motorcycle
  • Compliance with NTSA requirements for registered PSV operators

What it does not cover:

  • Damage to your own motorcycle (comprehensive cover adds this)
  • Your own medical expenses

Best for: Every registered boda boda operator in Kenya carrying passengers for hire.

Annual premium: From KES 3,000 to KES 6,500 depending on the insurer and SACCO registration status.

Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance

The fullest level of motorcycle cover available. Includes everything in third party cover plus protection for your own motorcycle.

What comprehensive motorcycle cover adds:

  • Own damage repairs to your motorcycle after an accident
  • Theft full replacement value if your motorcycle is stolen
  • Fire damage
  • Accidental damage from external causes

Best for: Riders whose motorcycles are worth more than KES 80,000, riders still paying hire purchase instalments on their bike, and delivery fleet operators who cannot afford downtime from an unrepaired motorcycle.

Annual premium: From KES 8,000 to KES 25,000 depending on the motorcycle's market value and engine capacity.

Delivery and Commercial Motorcycle Insurance

For motorcycles used exclusively for goods delivery courier services, food delivery platforms, logistics companies rather than passenger transport.

This product covers the specific risks of goods-in-transit riding: frequent urban stops and starts, high daily mileage, and the liability exposure of delivering third-party goods. It includes third party liability and can be extended to cover the goods being transported.

Best for: Glovo, Sendy, and other delivery platform riders, courier companies, and businesses operating delivery fleets.

Annual premium: From KES 4,000 to KES 10,000 depending on motorcycle value and goods carried.

The Hire Purchase Situation

If you bought your motorcycle on hire purchase through a SACCO loan, an MFI, or a direct lender  your lender almost certainly requires comprehensive motorcycle insurance as a condition of the loan. The lender is noted as an interested party on the policy, which means in the event of a total loss, the insurance payout clears your outstanding loan balance first.

Check your loan agreement. If comprehensive cover is required, a third party only policy puts you in breach of your financing terms  and your lender can take action.

The NTSA Requirement and What It Actually Means for Boda Boda Operators

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) regulates all public service vehicles in Kenya including boda bodas. NTSA requirements for boda boda operation include:

PSV licence for the motorcycle.
Your motorcycle must be registered as a PSV with NTSA. A private motorcycle registration is not valid for commercial passenger carrying.

PSV driving licence.
The rider must hold a driving licence with PSV endorsement specifically for motorcycles. A standard Class G licence (motorcycles) is not sufficient for PSV operation.

PSV insurance.
The motorcycle must carry PSV motorcycle insurance  not standard private motorcycle insurance. This is the requirement that most boda boda operators in Kenya are failing.

SACCO membership.
NTSA requires boda boda operators to be registered members of a recognised motorcycle PSV SACCO. The SACCO registration is a precondition for the PSV licence.

GetCovered Kenya works with insurers who understand the NTSA compliance framework. When you come to us for boda boda insurance, we issue a PSV motorcycle policy that satisfies all regulatory requirements  so your motorcycle is legal, your passengers are covered, and you are protected if something goes wrong.

Motorcycle Insurance and WIBA  What Boda Boda SACCOs Need to Know

This section is for SACCO chairpersons, fleet owners, and anyone managing multiple boda boda riders.

The Work Injury Benefits Act (WIBA) requires every employer in Kenya to hold WIBA insurance covering their employees against work-related injuries. If you are a SACCO that employs riders on a formal basis, WIBA applies to you.

Even if your riders are classified as independent operators rather than employees, the practical reality is that a serious rider injury during a commercial trip can result in a WIBA-equivalent claim. SACCOs that hold WIBA insurance protect both the organisation and the individual rider against the financial consequences of work-related injury.

WIBA insurance for a motorcycle SACCO covers:

  • Medical expenses for riders injured on duty
  • Compensation for permanent disability arising from a work accident
  • Death benefits payable to the rider's family if they are killed while working

The premium for WIBA insurance depends on the number of riders covered and their wage levels. For most boda boda SACCOs, it is one of the most cost-effective covers available — and one of the most important for the long-term sustainability of the organisation.

How to Make a Motorcycle Insurance Claim in Kenya

If You Are Involved in an Accident

Do not leave the scene. Make sure everyone involved receives first aid if needed. Call police if there are injuries or serious property damage  you need an OB abstract for any claim involving third parties.

Photograph everything. The motorcycles involved, the road conditions, the injuries, any property damage. Take the names and phone numbers of any witnesses.

Call GetCovered Kenya's claims line or WhatsApp us immediately. We will notify your insurer and guide you through the next steps. Most Kenyan insurers require notification within 24 hours of any incident.

Do not admit liability at the scene. Do not offer to pay or apologise in a way that implies fault. That is your insurer's role to determine.

If Your Motorcycle Is Stolen

Report to the nearest police station within 24 hours. Get the OB abstract. Call GetCovered Kenya. Do not wait. Late reporting is the most common reason theft claims are delayed or declined.

Your insurer will require the OB abstract, your logbook, both sets of keys, and a letter from the police confirming the theft was reported. Keep all of these documents safely.

What Happens Next

Your insurer appoints an assessor for accident damage claims. For straightforward third party claims  where another person is making a claim against you — the insurer handles the assessment and negotiation on your behalf. For theft claims on comprehensive policies, the process typically takes two to four weeks from the date all required documents are submitted.

GetCovered Kenya's claims support team follows up on your behalf throughout the process.

Frequently Asked Questions - Motorcycle Insurance Kenya

How much is motorcycle insurance in Kenya per year?
Third party motorcycle insurance in Kenya starts from KES 1,500 per year for a private motorcycle under 150cc. PSV motorcycle insurance for boda boda operators starts from KES 3,000 per year. Comprehensive motorcycle insurance starts from KES 8,000 per year depending on the motorcycle's market value. Get a live quote above for your exact rate in under 60 seconds.

Do boda boda operators need a different insurance from private riders?
Yes  this is critically important. Boda boda operators carrying fare-paying passengers must hold PSV motorcycle insurance. A standard private motorcycle third party policy is legally invalid for commercial passenger carrying. If you carry a passenger under a private policy and they are injured, your insurer can decline the claim and you become personally liable for their compensation.

Is motorcycle insurance compulsory in Kenya?
Yes. Under Section 205 of the Traffic Act (Cap 405), every motorcycle on a public road must carry at minimum third party insurance. Riding without insurance is a criminal offence punishable by fines, impoundment, and prosecution. For boda bodas, NTSA requires PSV insurance specifically.

Can I pay for motorcycle insurance monthly in Kenya?
Yes. GetCovered Kenya offers monthly installment payment via M-Pesa Lipa Mdogo Mdogo for comprehensive motorcycle insurance policies. Monthly premiums for comprehensive cover start from approximately KES 700 per month depending on your motorcycle's value. Annual third party policies are typically paid as a single annual premium due to the low total cost.

What happens if a boda boda rider is caught without insurance in Kenya?
The rider faces fines of up to KES 50,000, motorcycle impoundment, and potential criminal prosecution. More seriously, if the rider injures someone while uninsured, they are personally liable for the full compensation  which can reach millions of shillings in serious injury or death cases. The motorcycle is also likely to fail its next NTSA inspection without a valid insurance certificate.

Does motorcycle insurance cover the rider's own injuries?
Standard third party motorcycle insurance does not cover the rider's own medical expenses or injuries. It only covers compensation claims from third parties. For the rider's own injury protection, a personal accident insurance policy is the appropriate product  or a comprehensive policy that includes personal accident cover for the insured rider.

Can I insure a motorcycle that is still under hire purchase in Kenya?
Yes. Motorcycles under hire purchase must typically carry comprehensive insurance as a lender requirement. The finance company is noted as an interested party on the policy. In the event of a total loss, the insurance payout settles your outstanding loan balance first. GetCovered Kenya manages this arrangement directly with your insurer.

How do I know if my current motorcycle insurance certificate is genuine?
Check the certificate for the name of the issuing insurer and their IRA registration number. You can verify any insurer's IRA licence at ira.go.ke  search the licensed insurers register. If the insurer's name does not appear in the IRA register, the certificate is not legitimate. Every GetCovered Kenya certificate names the IRA-licensed underwriting insurer with their verified registration number.

How do I transfer my motorcycle insurance when I sell my bike?
Motorcycle insurance is tied to the specific motorcycle  not to the owner personally. When you sell your motorcycle, the insurance policy is cancelled and a pro-rata refund of unused premium is typically available. The buyer needs to take out a new policy in their own name. Contact GetCovered Kenya when selling your motorcycle and we will manage the cancellation and refund process with your insurer.
