Get the best schengen travel insurance in minutes

Njeri has a Schengen visa appointment at the French Embassy in Gigiri on Friday morning. It is Tuesday. Her checklist says she needs travel insurance  but she has no idea which policy the embassy will actually accept, how much medical cover she needs, or how to get a certificate before Friday.

She is not alone. This is the situation thousands of Kenyan Schengen applicants find themselves in every single week.

GetCovered Kenya issues embassy-approved Schengen travel insurance certificates from IRA-licensed Kenyan insurers  within minutes of payment via M-Pesa. EUR 30,000 medical cover included as standard. Valid across all 27 Schengen states. Accepted at VFS Global and TLScontact Nairobi application centres.

What Is Schengen Travel Insurance and Why Is It Mandatory in Kenya?

Schengen travel insurance is a mandatory requirement for all non-EU citizens applying for a Schengen visa, including Kenyan passport holders.

The policy must provide minimum emergency medical cover of EUR 30,000, be valid across all 27 Schengen member states, and cover the applicant's entire intended stay. Without a compliant insurance certificate, your Schengen visa application cannot be processed  regardless of all other documents submitted.

The Schengen Area is a zone of 27 European countries that have abolished passport controls at their shared borders. For Kenyan passport holders, visiting any of these countries requires a Schengen visa  and that visa application is impossible to complete without travel insurance.

This is not a recommendation. It is not a best practice. It is a hard legal requirement under EU Regulation No. 810/2009 (the Schengen Visa Code), Article 15. Every consulate of every Schengen member state applies it without exception.

The policy must meet three non-negotiable standards. First, the medical cover limit must be at least EUR 30,000  approximately KES 4.2 million at current exchange rates. Second, the policy must be geographically valid across all 27 Schengen states  not just your primary destination country. Third, the policy must cover your entire intended travel period from departure to return.

Submit a policy that fails any of these three tests and your application is rejected. Not delayed. Rejected.

GetCovered Kenya's Schengen travel insurance meets all three requirements automatically. Every policy we issue for Schengen applications is verified against these standards before the certificate is sent to you.

Not sure which policy is right for you?

The 27 Schengen Countries — Which Ones Does Your Policy Need to Cover?
This is where many Kenyan applicants make their first mistake. They buy a policy for "France" because that is their primary destination  but the policy only covers France and is invalid if their itinerary includes a day trip to Belgium or a transit through Germany.

Your Schengen travel insurance must cover every country in the Schengen zone, regardless of which specific countries you plan to visit. Here are all 27 member states your policy covers automatically through GetCovered Kenya:

Western Europe: France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein
Northern Europe: Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania
Southern Europe: Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Malta, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary
Central and Eastern Europe: Poland, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria

Note: Some of these countries  Romania, Bulgaria, and Croatia  only joined the Schengen Area recently. Ensure your policy explicitly states "all Schengen states" rather than listing specific countries, which can create gaps as membership evolves.

All GetCovered Kenya Schengen policies state geographic coverage as "All Schengen Member States"  so any current or future membership changes do not create a coverage gap in your certificate.

What Does Schengen Travel Insurance Cover in Kenya?
A Schengen travel insurance policy from the GetCovered Kenya panel covers the following as standard:

Emergency Medical Expenses — Minimum EUR 30,000
This is the core requirement and the most important benefit. If you fall ill or are injured during your European trip, your insurer pays for emergency medical treatment — hospital admission, surgery, specialist consultations, prescribed medication, and emergency dental treatment.

EUR 30,000 is the minimum required. It sounds like a lot — and in Kenya it is. But healthcare in Western Europe is expensive. A single night in a German hospital can cost EUR 1,500 to EUR 3,000. A serious accident requiring surgery and a week of intensive care can easily exceed EUR 30,000. For longer trips or older travellers, GetCovered Kenya recommends choosing a policy with EUR 50,000 to EUR 100,000 medical cover.

Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation
If you suffer a medical emergency that cannot be treated locally  or if you need to be transported back to Kenya for ongoing care  evacuation and repatriation cover pays for the full cost of your medical transport. In the event of death abroad, repatriation of mortal remains to Kenya is also covered.

Trip Cancellation
If a serious illness, family bereavement, or other insured event forces you to cancel your European trip before departure, trip cancellation cover reimburses your non-refundable prepaid costs  flight tickets, hotel deposits, tour reservations, and visa fees in some cases.

This benefit is most valuable when purchased well in advance of your trip. If you buy Schengen insurance the day before your flight, trip cancellation cover provides limited value. Buy as soon as your trip is confirmed.

Travel Delay and Missed Connection
Flight delays are common on European routes. If your outbound or return flight is delayed beyond the policy threshold  typically four to six hours  travel delay cover pays a daily cash allowance for meals and accommodation. Missed connection cover applies where a delay causes you to miss an onward flight or transfer.

Baggage Loss and Delay
Covers loss, theft, or damage to personal belongings during your trip. Baggage delay cover pays for emergency purchases of essential items when your checked luggage does not arrive with you. Sublimits apply to electronics, jewellery, and cash.

Personal Accident
Lump-sum payment in the event of accidental death or permanent disability arising from an accident during your Schengen trip. Paid to you or your named beneficiaries.

Personal Liability
Covers your legal liability to third parties if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property during your trip. This benefit is particularly relevant in European countries where personal injury litigation is common.

How Much Does Schengen Travel Insurance Cost in Kenya?
Schengen travel insurance from the GetCovered Kenya panel is priced primarily by trip duration and the number of travellers. Here are realistic 2026 premium ranges:

Trip Duration | Single Traveller | Two Adults | Family (2+2) | Senior (65+)
1–7 days | KES 2,500 – 4,500 | KES 4,500 – 8,000 | KES 7,000 – 13,000 | KES 5,500 – 9,000
8–15 days | KES 4,000 – 7,000 | KES 7,500 – 13,000 | KES 11,000 – 20,000 | KES 8,500 – 15,000
16–30 days | KES 6,000 – 11,000 | KES 11,000 – 20,000 | KES 17,000 – 32,000 | KES 13,000 – 24,000
31–60 days | KES 10,000 – 18,000 | KES 18,000 – 34,000 | KES 28,000 – 52,000 | KES 22,000 – 40,000
61–90 days | KES 15,000 – 26,000 | KES 27,000 – 48,000 | KES 40,000 – 75,000 | KES 32,000 – 58,000

Important:
These are indicative market ranges from the GetCovered Kenya IRA-licensed insurer panel as of June 2026. Your exact premium depends on your specific insurer, traveller ages, declared medical conditions, and chosen cover level. Premium rates change with exchange rate movements — KES/EUR fluctuations directly affect Schengen insurance pricing.

What Affects Your Schengen Insurance Premium?
Trip duration
is the biggest driver. A 7-day Paris trip costs roughly half what a 30-day multi-country European holiday costs.

Traveller age matters significantly. Most Kenyan insurers apply premium loadings for travellers aged 60 and above, with steeper loadings above 70. Senior citizen travel insurance is a separate, specialised product for travellers over 65  see our senior citizen travel insurance page for dedicated options.

Medical cover limit chosen. EUR 30,000 is the minimum. Policies offering EUR 50,000 or EUR 100,000 cost more but offer meaningfully better protection for longer trips or travellers with health considerations.

Pre-existing conditions. Declaring a managed chronic condition  hypertension, diabetes, asthma  typically adds a premium loading but ensures you are fully covered. Not declaring it risks a total claim denial if that condition becomes relevant during your trip.

What the Embassy Actually Checks on Your Schengen Insurance Certificate
This is the section that saves visa applications. Many Kenyans arrive at VFS Global or TLScontact with a certificate that looks legitimate but fails the desk check  because it does not meet one or more of the specific formatting or content requirements.
Here is exactly what the Schengen visa application desk looks for on your certificate:

1. The minimum EUR 30,000 medical cover limit  stated explicitly.
The certificate must show the medical cover amount in EUR (or an equivalent amount confirmed by the insurer). A certificate that says "emergency medical cover included" without a stated limit will be questioned or rejected.

2. Geographic scope  "all Schengen states" or equivalent.
The certificate must confirm coverage across the Schengen Area. A certificate listing specific countries creates risk if your itinerary or transit takes you through an unlisted country.

3. Validity dates matching your intended travel period.
The policy start date must be on or before your stated arrival date in Europe. The policy end date must be on or after your stated departure date from Europe. A one-day gap in either direction can cause rejection.

4. The insured person's full name  exactly as on your passport.
The name on the certificate must match your passport exactly. A middle name missing, an initial used instead of a full name, or a typo can create a discrepancy that the desk officer flags.

5. The insurer's name and contact details.
The certificate must clearly identify the issuing insurance company  not just the intermediary. GetCovered Kenya issues certificates in the name of the underwriting insurer, with the insurer's IRA registration number and emergency assistance contact number clearly displayed.

6. A policy or certificate number.
The embassy can use this to verify the policy with the insurer if they choose to. All GetCovered Kenya Schengen certificates carry a unique policy number traceable to the issuing insurer.

7. The original stamp and signature of the insurer (for physical submissions).
Some embassies still require a physically stamped and signed certificate  particularly for applications submitted in hard copy rather than digitally. Our certificates are issued with the insurer's official stamp and authorised signature.

The VFS Global and TLScontact Nairobi Situation
VFS Global and TLScontact are the two visa application centre operators handling Schengen applications in Nairobi on behalf of most European embassies. Their document checkers are experienced and consistent  but they follow embassy-specific checklists that vary slightly by country.

The French Embassy has specific requirements that differ from the German Embassy. The Netherlands processes applications through TLScontact with slightly different document standards than the Italian Embassy. GetCovered Kenya's travel advisors know these country-by-country variations in detail. When you come to us for Schengen insurance, we confirm which embassy you are applying to and ensure your certificate meets that embassy's specific requirements  not just the general Schengen minimum.

Embassy-by-Embassy Guide Schengen Insurance Requirements for Kenya
French Embassy / VFS Global Nairobi
France is the most popular Schengen destination for Kenyan applicants. The French Embassy in Nairobi processes the majority of its visa applications through VFS Global.

Insurance requirements: Minimum EUR 30,000 medical cover. Valid across all Schengen states. Dates must cover the full intended stay. Certificate in the applicant's name.

Important note:
The French Embassy accepts digital certificates printed in black and white. You do not need a colour printout. However, the certificate must be printed  a screenshot or PDF displayed on a phone screen is not acceptable at physical submission.

German Embassy Nairobi

The German Embassy processes applications directly without a VFS intermediary for most categories.
Insurance requirements: Minimum EUR 30,000 medical cover. The German Embassy is particularly strict about the geographic scope the certificate must explicitly state "all Schengen member states" or equivalent. Country-specific listings are questioned.

Important note: The German Embassy has historically required certificates from insurers with internationally recognised assistance networks. All GetCovered Kenya Schengen policies meet this requirement.

Netherlands Embassy (via TLScontact Nairobi)

The Netherlands Embassy uses TLScontact as its application centre in Nairobi.

Insurance requirements: Standard Schengen minimum EUR 30,000, all Schengen states, dates matching intended stay.

Important note: TLScontact document checkers are known to scrutinise the insurer's contact details on the certificate. Ensure the emergency assistance number is clearly displayed this is standard on all GetCovered Kenya Schengen certificates.

Italian Embassy Nairobi

Italy processes Schengen applications through its embassy directly.

Insurance requirements: EUR 30,000 minimum. The Italian Embassy specifically notes that the insurance must cover "repatriation for medical reasons" ensure this is explicitly stated in your certificate.

Other Schengen Embassies
For Spain, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Portugal, Greece, and all other Schengen member states with representation in Nairobi, the standard requirements apply. GetCovered Kenya's advisors can confirm specific requirements for your target embassy

Schengen Travel Insurance for Specific Kenyan Applicant Profiles
Students and Young Professionals

Thousands of Kenyan students travel to Europe annually for exchange programmes, postgraduate study, language courses, and academic conferences. Standard Schengen travel insurance covers single trips up to 90 days for most student travel purposes.

For students taking up long-stay study programmes (more than 90 days), a standard Schengen short-stay visa is not appropriate a national long-stay visa (D-visa) is required, with different insurance requirements. Contact our advisors before buying if your intended stay exceeds three months.

Business Travellers

Kenyan professionals travelling to Europe for business meetings, conferences, trade fairs (such as Frankfurt Book Fair, Hannover Messe, or Milan fashion events), or business negotiations need Schengen insurance covering their full itinerary. Business travellers making multiple European trips per year should strongly consider our multi-trip travel insurance, which covers unlimited trips within a 12-month period.

Families Travelling Together
Family Schengen applications where two adults and their children are all applying together — benefit from a family policy that covers all travellers under a single certificate. This is more cost-effective than individual policies and simplifies your documentation folder. Each family member's name must appear on the certificate. Contact our team if you need a family Schengen certificate.

Senior Applicants (60+)
Standard Schengen policies carry higher premium loadings for older travellers, and some apply age caps. If you are 65 or older, our senior citizen travel insurance is specifically designed for your needs including options to cover stable pre-existing conditions that standard policies would exclude.

Multiple Entry Schengen Visa Applications
If you are applying for a multiple-entry Schengen visa which allows you to enter the Schengen zone multiple times within the visa's validity period your insurance must cover your first intended trip. You will need to obtain separate cover for each subsequent trip under the multiple-entry visa. Our multi-trip annual policy is ideal for frequent Schengen travellers.

Common Schengen Insurance Mistakes That Get Kenyan Applications Rejected

After processing thousands of Schengen travel insurance certificates, here are the mistakes we see most often and how to avoid every one of them.

Buying a policy with insufficient medical cover.
Some budget travel insurance products sold in Kenya offer medical cover as low as EUR 15,000 or USD 20,000  below the EUR 30,000 Schengen minimum. The embassy desk will spot this instantly. Always confirm the medical cover amount in EUR before buying.

Dates that do not match your itinerary.
Your policy start date must be on or before your first day in the Schengen zone. Your policy end date must be on or after your last day. If your flight lands in Paris on September 1st and your policy starts September 2nd, your application will fail. GetCovered Kenya's certificates are generated with your exact dates  but double-check before submitting.

Name discrepancy between the certificate and your passport.
Mary Wanjiku Kamau applying with a certificate in the name of "Mary Kamau" may be questioned. Ensure the name on your certificate matches your passport exactly  including all names and their exact spelling.

Buying from an unlicensed intermediary.
Some intermediaries operating on WhatsApp and social media sell "Schengen certificates" that are not backed by an IRA-licensed insurer. These certificates may look identical to genuine ones but carry no legal weight. The embassy cannot verify them with any licensed insurer and will reject them. Every certificate issued through GetCovered Kenya is backed by a named, IRA-licensed Kenyan insurer with a verifiable registration number.

Not covering transit countries.
If your route to France goes through Amsterdam or Frankfurt, you are in the Schengen zone from the moment you clear passport control at your transit airport. Your insurance must cover your transit day too. GetCovered Kenya policies cover all Schengen states from your policy start date your transit is automatically covered.

Cancelling or letting the policy lapse before your return date.
Do not cancel your Schengen policy while you are still in Europe. If you extend your stay, contact us before your original policy end date to arrange an extension. Travelling on an expired policy  even by one day  means you are uninsured.

If your Schengen visa is rejected after you purchase insurance, most Kenyan travel insurers will refund your premium less an administrative charge  provided the policy has not yet started and no claim has been made. Contact GetCovered Kenya immediately upon receiving a visa rejection and we will manage the refund request with your insurer. Keep your visa rejection letter as it is required documentation for the refund request.

Does Schengen insurance cover COVID-19 or other pandemic-related cancellations?
Most current Schengen travel insurance policies include emergency medical cover for COVID-19 treatment if you contract the virus during your European trip.
